Futuresource Digital Storage Tracker Highlights Bumper Year for the Solid State Drive Sales
Digital Storage Market Analysis and Commentary
07 April 2016 - Futuresource Consulting has published the latest quarterly results from its digital storage tracking service which states that 2015 represented another record year for solid state drive (SSD) sales across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)*, with shipments reaching 10.6 million units. Year-on-year growth slowed to 18% compared to 2014 across the region, while growth in the Middle East exceeded 135%.
Germany is the largest market for SSD drives in EMEA accounting for 27% of the shipments, followed by UK at 15% and France and Russia each accounting for around 10%.
"SSD continues to gain ground on HDD, as prices per gigabyte fall and consumers seek the unique performance characteristics associated with flash-based storage for use with PC's," commented Mats Larsson, Senior Analyst at Futuresource consulting. "We expect the format to grow 20% this year, while equivalent HDD drives fall 18%."
Samsung remained the market leader in the region despite product shortages towards the end of the year. Kingston followed Samsung, yet both companies represent two-thirds of overall volumes. Toshiba enjoyed the strongest annual growth in the region. 240/256GB is the most popular capacity followed by 120/128GB and accounts for almost 3/4 of sales, but with 480-512GB capacity band showing the strongest growth.
