Futuresource Consulting unveils latest insights on the USA consumer photo market

Futuresource Consulting is excited to announce the release of its latest report on the USA consumer photo market. This comprehensive analysis provides an in-depth look at the consumer-ordered photo output sector in the USA, excluding professional photo, school/college/university yearbook, and school photo products.

The report reveals that total USA consumer photo market value is projected to grow to over $8 billion by 2028. Photo-merchandise continues to dominate the market and is expected to maintain this share through 2028.

"We are thrilled to share the findings of our latest report, which provides a detailed analysis of the USA consumer photo market," said Jeremy Wills, Principal Analyst, Futuresource Consulting. "This report is an essential resource for industry stakeholders looking to understand market trends, consumer preferences, and the competitive landscape."

The Futuresource USA Consumer Photo Market report offers a comprehensive overview of the key photo market categories. It maps out product categories such as photo merchandise, photo prints and photobooks while also providing invaluable competitive market share data.

Growth in photo merchandise and personalised gifts

According to the report, the photo merchandise market saw growth in volume, with the photo gifts segment showing the most growth. This suggests that consumers are increasingly interested in personalised photo products (as part of the wider personalisation ‘boom’), which can serve as meaningful gifts and keepsakes. Companies in this market may benefit from expanding their product offerings and marketing efforts to capitalise on this trend.

Shift in retail on-site and back-end photo prints production technology

The photo prints market has experienced modest volume growth, but more significant value growth, with retailers and e-tailers able to monetise non-standard (6x4”) photo prints sizes in particular. For both-on site (retail) and back-end photo prints production, there has been continued shift from silver halide to inkjet, toner, and dye sublimation printing solutions. This shift indicates a trend towards more environmentally friendly production of photo prints, although many within the photo category would still maintain the supremacy of silver halide photo prints.

Photobooks and the power of personalisation

The consumer photobook market, which spiked in volume and value terms during 2020 and 2021, has since slowed down in volume terms and is in low level YoY decline. However, with options for enhanced substrates, lay-flat books, larger sizes, bespoke book covers, and printing and embossing innovations, USA photobook market value rose in 2023 and is set to continue to grow through to 2028. Personalisation in photobooks enables customers to create unique and meaningful keepsakes that capture their individual memories and stories. This trend presents an opportunity for innovative companies to attract consumers by offering more personalised and distinctive photobook options.

Shifting consumer ordering methods

Consumer ordering methods are shifting towards web-based methods, with web-to-home orders expected to make up a significant portion of all photo volumes in the future. Additionally, on-site (retail) instant print kiosks are becoming more popular in the USA, in lieu of back of counter minilabs, (with print kiosks having been a key element of Western European retail Photo Prints production for many years).

This shift highlights the importance of convenience and accessibility for consumers, and companies that can provide seamless online ordering experiences and quick turnaround times are likely to succeed in this evolving market.
