Student device ownership is shifting, and the latest Student Journey report from Futuresource Consulting pinpoints the critical trends shaping how university students choose, use and invest in their education technology.
With insights from over 3,000 students across the USA and UK, this in-depth research study explores the transition from high school to university devices, the purchasing motivations, financial realities and brand loyalties.
The 100-page report shows that, while many students receive their primary device as a gift from family or friends, they still have the final say in what they use. A significant proportion of students plan to keep their current device for at least another year, prioritising reliability over frequent upgrades. The decision-making process is influenced by OS preferences, course requirements and extracurricular activities, reflecting a more considered approach to tech investment.
As fewer universities provide devices, students are taking a more active role in funding their own tech. Futuresource notes that there are key differences in the way students in the USA purchase devices, compared to students in the UK. Financial pressures are impacting how and when devices are bought, with affordability and long-term usability now bigger concerns than ever.
The research also shows that students are seeking out practical, long-term value when choosing their primary devices. Durability, value for money and battery life have become essential factors in these decisions. Students need devices that can withstand the rigours of daily use and last through their academic years without constant upgrades or repairs.
University life is far more than coursework, with esports continuing to drive engagement. Once considered a niche pastime, competitive gaming has evolved into a mainstream activity that fosters social connections, strategic thinking and teamwork. Many students now see esports as more than just entertainment. It's a gateway to building problem-solving skills, engaging with peers and even accessing scholarship opportunities.
"We’re seeing students tread a complex device pathway,” says Natalie Tapera, Lead Market Analyst at Futuresource Consulting. “They’re balancing performance, longevity, compatibility, brand perceptions and cost. As digital learning continues to evolve, those brands that deliver durable, high-value solutions have a significant opportunity to stand out in this evolving space.”
