Global pro camcorder market achieves 7% annual growth

The global pro camcorder market posted annual volume growth in 2023, according to new figures released by Futuresource Consulting.

This 7% market expansion was achieved despite a turbulent year that witnessed more than six months of Hollywood strike action by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. Quarter-on-quarter, Q4 2023 also outperformed Q3, registering an increase of 9%, to end the year on more than 225,000 shipments. However, despite the rise in sell-in, annual market value dipped slightly due to a drop in ASP.

Americas on the rise

“Last year was far from tranquil for the pro camcorder market,” says Amrit Mishra, Research Analyst, Futuresource Consulting. “We saw plenty of market turbulence in our quarterly tracking, with some clear country-level differences coming through in the numbers. Looking to the regions, the Americas experienced the greatest rate of annual volume growth, up 25%, followed by double-digit growth from APAC. While the EMEA region experienced annual market contraction, the year finished on a high globally, with Q4 outperforming Q3 for all regions.”

Sony continues to dominate

“Growth in the Americas and APAC was propelled forward by Sony’s continued market dominance. The camcorder giant continued to extend its global lead, driven by an increased sell-in of its ILME series products. In Q4, nearly four in every five pro camcorders sold worldwide came from the Sony stable.”

More growth for 2024 and beyond

“2024 is shaping up for success,” says Mishra. “With the Hollywood strikes concluding late last year, and several general elections scheduled for the coming months, including the USA, UK and India, we expect global shipments to achieve a single-digit increase this year. Our forecasts show ongoing opportunities throughout the forecast period, due to increased demand from non-traditional verticals such as education, government and corporate, plus demand for Sony’s large sensor camcorders, as they recapture volume from convergent DSLR/mirrorless camera sales.”
