Bett 2019: The Now and Next of Edtech

Education Technology Market Research, Analysis and Commentary

As the education sector gears up for this year’s Bett show, exploring the role of technology and innovation, Futuresource Consulting identifies the key trends and devices to watch out for.

This roundup is brought to you by the education technology team at Futuresource and will help you steer a pathway through the technology landscape. With 34,000 attendees from across the globe, more than 800 leading companies and over 100 edtech start-ups, there’s a lot to take in at Bett. And if you need any further guidance, the Futuresource team will be on the show floor throughout the show to ensure you get the best possible experience and will share its Bett 2019 Show Report next week.

Mobile PC Devices

A number of AMD-based education-focused mobile PC devices will be showcased by a range of manufacturers. Both HP and Acer showcased new AMD based Chromebooks at CES this year with device launces expected at Bett. Many brands are introducing these products in an attempt to offset current shortfalls in the supply of entry-level Intel chipsets.

Chrome Tabs

Chrome tabs will continue to be brought to market by Google partners, as the tech giant sets it sights on iPad users in schools. Futuresource expects a series of launches at Bett, bringing other brands in alongside Acer’s offering.  Watch out for the massaging around STEM content and use case to compete with the strong content ecosystem Apple offers educators on iPad.

AR

Both Apple and Google have indicated their commitment to introducing AR into education.  Futuresource expects a range of thought-provoking and innovative content demonstrations to be showcased across the event.

Interactive Flat Panels

Look out for announcements about In-Touch technology, the developments surrounding it and how it can promote greater accuracy in touch performance and improved picture quality. Futuresource also expects announcements about advances in the trend towards greater display personalisation.

Data Security

Futuresource expects that student privacy, data security and GDPR will all be major talking points. As the amount of student data that is captured and held continues to rise, and the number of interoperable platforms increases, concerns about privacy are intensifying. This is being compounded by a sense of uncertainty among many schools, unsure of how to tackle the problem and be compliant. As a result, it will be interesting to see how the big tech companies handle their data security messaging at Bett.

Platform Integration

As with data security, data transfer and interoperability between platforms used in schools is an increasingly pressing issue. Efficiency and ease-of-use are cornerstones of a successful deployment.  Futuresource expects to see the big productivity tool providers like Microsoft and Google announcing partnerships and integration with other school software.

Personalised Teaching Solutions

While adoption of truly adaptive learning software in schools is limited to a few advanced cases, Futuresource anticipates a raft of start-ups and established technology providers to showcase the ability of their solutions to personalise learning. When considering the obstacles of platform integration, student privacy and data security, the use of technology and student data to create personalised learning solutions will wait years to be finally realised, but it’s a big buzz topic in the industry and certainly one to watch.

Exclusive Futuresource Industry Briefing

Futuresource Consulting is also once again delighted to be hosting its exclusive invitation-only industry briefing on Thursday 24th January. The briefing, ‘EdTech in schools: Investment Priorities in a Changing Landscape’, will consist of short panel session exploring current education market dynamics and investment priorities. Following the presentation session, attendees will get the chance to network, share a glass and enjoy canapes with some of the leading providers in the industry. The key takeaways from the panel discussion will also be included in the Futuresource show report.
